Chapter 10
Gareth smiled gently as the early morning touched Zetta's hair. She was sleeping with her head resting on his chest, and the waves of her short hair were splayed over his skin like pieces of exotic silk. Gently, so as not to wake her, he ran his hand over its softness. It felt cool, but the effect on him as it moved over his naked torso was more like a fire. When a curl sprang round his finger, chaining him to her, he sighed with contentment.
He was exactly where he wanted to be.
The last hour he had spent just watching over her as she slept. A part of him had wanted to wake her up with kisses, wanted to appease the hot desire that still rode him even after all of last night's exertions.
But he hadn't.
Instead, he had found himself content just to feel the way she rested trustingly on his chest, her limbs entwined with his. Which proved what a pathetic creature he had become, he thought wryly.
Not so pitiable, however, that he wasn't aware of the feet that lying with her in his arms was also driving him a little mad. He had spent the last hour in a state of arousal, but then, he acknowledged, he had been in that state almost constantly since the day she had tried to rob him. He had wanted her from that moment, but more than that, he realized now, he had loved her. And now she was his.
His arms tightened around her as he placed a light kiss on the top of her head, luxuriating in the perfume from her hair that filled his senses.
"You're squeezing me," she said in a gruff voice, and he was smiling as he loosened his hold, a little.
"Sorry."
"So I think you should be."
"Do you always wake up grumpy?" he said with a chuckle.
She yawned and rolled over onto her belly, regarding him with a baleful glare. "Only when I'm woken by some idiot trying to squeeze the breath out of me," she said tersely. She crossed her arms over his chest and rested her chin between them as she eyed his smiling face with disgust. "And are you always this disturbingly happy in the morning?"
"Only when I wake up and find you sleeping by my side. The rest of the time, I swear, I'm like a wolf with a bad head."
His lopsided smile brought a strange, fluttery feeling to her stomach but she tried to ignore it as she ran a hand over his smooth chest. "This doesn't feel like your side."
The laugh that came from deep inside his chest was almost a growl. "No, it's not my side, but it still feels damn good," he murmured huskily as he reached down for an all too brief kiss.
She let herself savor the taste of him on her lips and the feel of his muscular body under hers for a moment and then let out a long sigh. "I had best be getting back to mother and Edrit.
